Write for Us

Our readers trust us to deliver beautiful, thought-provoking and original content in every single issue. Each story, image and illustration should captivate and help capture the magic of camping so it can be enjoyed in the great outdoors just the same as it could be on the couch at home, in a cafe or at an airport.

Have a great backcountry camping story that you can’t wait to tell? Fill out the form below.

We believe that backcountry camping is for everyone. As such, we highly encourage folks who are under-recognized in this community to submit their pitches.

Pitches should be no longer than 200 words and should include the topic, the proposed interviews and any other relevant research that might support a great story. All that matters is that you have a great idea—we don’t ask for credentials when deciding whether a story idea is a good one. If you do have a portfolio or previously published content, though, feel free to share it to give us a better idea of what we can expect.

We accept editorial-style articles, interviews and stories. We don’t accept gear reviews. We also heavily prioritize articles that include original photography; we accept photo essays and illustrations on their own, too. We believe in paying writers, photographers and illustrators for their work. We don’t pay per word—a great story takes as many words as it takes to tell—and instead differentiate between articles and features.

On paying creatives for their work: We aim to pay writers, photographers and illustrators industry-leading rates once we’ve been able to produce and sell a few copies. Stick with us.

Note: We believe writing, photography and illustration are forms of art, and art is a uniquely human pursuit. As such, we don’t accept work that is generated using generative AI. We’re working on our gen-AI use policy, but if you have to justify your pitch with “well, technically” then it probably won’t be accepted.
